Throughout my lifelong obsession with fitness, one thing has become increasingly apparent: you HAVE to take your fitness seriously in your 20s.
If you’re in your 20s or even your teens, you HAVE to use this time to build your body and lay the foundation for your health and physique for the remainder of your life.
The truth is that it is EXTREMELY uncommon for people to get into shape for the first time if they’re past their 20s. Meaning if you weren’t in great shape in your 20s, it’s probably never going to happen. I with that weren’t true, but that’s just the way it is.
Let me be clear – it’s not because people in their 30s and beyond can’t get ripped – they absolutely can. But what I’ve found is that almost every time, if someone didn’t have that fire in their 20s, they will never have it. This is just the data.
Getting into your best shape requires some fire. You gotta have that dog in you, so to speak. It’s much more than just having a good workout plan and a meal plan. That’s actually the easy part. But the unfortunate truth is that, for most people, that fire dies out a bit with every passing year. The dog inside them gets a little more comfortable and domesticated.
Doing fitness right means keeping that dog inside of you alive. I’m not saying it’s easy. It’s definitely harder for me now than when I was 18. But it’s what it takes.
For many reasons, your late teens and 20s are the easiest it will ever be to get ripped. My point here is that the mental side is the most important. If you didn’t do it when things were easy – do you REALLY think you’re going to do it when things are harder? Almost nobody does.
So what should you do if you’re 30+ and know you haven’t hit your fitness goals? First you need to decide if fitness is important to you. If you’re reading my blog, then the answer is probably “yes”. Next you need to admit that you’ve been f**king around. Don’t lie to yourself. Now you need to decide whether or not you’re going to be the exception to the rule. Will it be easy? Absolutely not! Will it be worth it! Yes 1000 times over.
No matter your age, today is the youngest you’ll ever be for the rest of your life. You’ll never have more youth than you do right now. Don’t underestimate the importance of that fact.
